Forest Management Plans

A Forest Management Plan is a comprehensive written report prepared to guide a landowner and the forester in managing the property to meet the owner’s objectives. The plan should  maximize and balance benefits, including financial objectives, recreational opportunities, aesthetic concerns, and environmental issues. A good forest management plan is the first step in long term property management. We offer management plans that are designed to meet your specific objectives. Our plans meet standards for state stewardship programs, certification programs, and sustainability standards.

Management plans include:

  • A description of current land and timber stand conditions
  • Current timber values
  • Maps – topo, timber type, soil
  • Identification of ecologically and culturally sensitive areas
  • Recommendations to achieve the owner’s objectives
  • Harvest planning
  • Reforestation planning
  • Cash flow projections
  • Growth, yield and financial projections

Timber Appraisals & Sales

A professional forester is essential in developing an accurate timber appraisal and handling a sale that will ensure that the landowner will receive the maximum value for their timber. Farm & Timber Properties can handle the entire process. From inventories and appraisals, negotiating with timber companies, supervision of logging operations and reforestation, we can make the entire process a smooth one.

GIS/GPS mapping

A comprehensive Geographic Information System (GIS)/Geographic Positioning System (GPS) mapping plan is one of the foundations of sound land management. We develop detailed maps with information gathered on a stand level basis to describe your property and track changes over time. These maps help in analyzing stand conditions, wildlife habitat, unique features and overall landscapes and are important in developing and implementing an overall management plan.

Case Study: Selective Hardwood Harvest

A Jackson County landowner asked Farm and Timber Properties to assess the best options for a tract that had suffered losses from pine beetles. What we found was a unique combination of mature hardwood and young poplar, oak, and hickory. We helped the property owner with a solution that allowed harvest of mature hardwoods and quick regeneration of the forest.
